We Went to Haiti... What's Next?
As we mentioned in some of our blogs (Lamia, Tas), we are both going to follow through and continue our work in Haiti. This will be done by relaunching Haiti: Hands On, in order to fundraise and develop our projects.
Lamia's focus project is to develop a trash system in Terre Froide, Haiti and it's neighbouring communities. At the moment, no such thing exists and all trash is being thrown off to the side of the road into the environment. Her plan will bring an end to this through awareness and the creation of a better program. This will eventually include a composting system, a recycling system, a garbage truck to pick up general waste as well as the launch of trash art workshops with the community youth to turn whatever is possible into small items they could sell. This entire project will be done by her in collaboration with Terre Froide's youth organisation (L'Association du Développement Culturel des Jeunes de Terre Froide/ The Association for the Cultural Development of the Youth in Terre Froide) and the local support she has on the ground.
Tas' focus project is to develop a kindergarten school in Terre Froide, Haiti. Knowledge is power and to become knowledgeable we need education, that is how we can empower our global youth to make a change. Schooling at a young age is the perfect way for them to start; everyone needs a foundation. Instead of having to walk three hours to school and already being tired before their classes even start, her plan is to make sure that there is a school for the whole community where the farthest they will have to walk, would be under ten minutes. She plans to make this happen by raising enough money to buy materials to build the school, followed by paying for teachers, then creating a cafeteria system and paying a janitor to maintain the facility. This project can help Terre Froide's youth have power to change and better their community with their own ideas; it will give them a base of fundamental skills they really need.
Haiti: Hands On (Year 2) will focus on the same three fundraising systems as last year: tutoring, babysitting and birthday party planning as well as our monthly bake sales at ACS. But, on top of that, this year we will also be adding separate events throughout the year to help move these projects forward. We will continue to spread our initiative throughout Abu Dhabi, instead of limiting it to just our school. For any information on how you could help out, donate, or just to find out more, feel free to click the 'Quick Email Contact' button in the top bar and write us an email. Our focuses for this year are to create our own projects for the community now that we have seen what they really need most, so, in other words, developing our two main projects listed above.
