Haiti

Haiti is a Francophone country with official languages of French and Haitian Creole. The population is just over 10 million and is among the poorest countries in the world. It has the 22nd lowest per capita GDP of the world, of about $726 and has a 77% poverty rate. More than half of the Haitian population lives on less than $1 a day, and about 80% of the country lives on less that $2 a day.

Haiti: Hands On:
In order to fundraise for the trip, we initiated the Haiti: Hands On program in our city, Abu Dhabi, and primarily, at our school. Our approach to the program was using our nationalities, French and Haitian, to enhance our service learning. We collected funds through babysitting, tutoring, planning birthday parties, bakesales, donations and more. We not only reached, but exceeded our fundraising goal in May.
We will travel from Port-au-Prince where we will land to Terre Froide where the program takes place (about 85 kilometres). Terre Froide is in the Fond-Verrettes region, found in the east of Haiti (near the border of the Dominican Republic). Locations can be found on the map below:
